The popularity of content writing – which countries are leading in content creation?

Table of content

Around the world, as many as 1.2 billion people work as freelancers, with 17% of them being content creators. Globally, this means that approximately 200 million people are involved in writing. In this report, we indicate how this number is distributed among individual countries.

Which country is a leader in content writing?

According to data from the contentwriter.co platform, the highest number of writers is in Pakistan. Out of all the surveyed writers (n= 9423), a significant 36.83% indicated this country.

In second place is Nigeria (25.50%), and the last place on the podium is occupied by India (9.50%).

The main causes of this phenomenon are the growing access to the Internet, a large and young population (in Nigeria, the average age is only 18!), as well as the knowledge of the English language (as all these countries were British colonies). An additional, though difficult to quantify, advantage may be the strong digital engagement of users in these regions, resulting in incredible activity on gig platforms like UpWork or Fiverr.

Kenya holds the fourth place – 6.28% of all writers come from this country. Bangladesh is in fifth place (2.89%), the United States is in sixth place (2.30%), and Poland is in seventh place (1.97%). The last positions in the top ten are occupied by Italy (1.16%), the UK (1.01%), and Indonesia (0.9%).

The results correspond quite well with the Google Trends data, which also help determine the popularity of content writing in individual countries. We have transferred the visualization of the results obtained from this tool to the map below.

Which country has the fewest content creators?

Determining which countries generate the least online content is a challenging task. Firstly, white spots on the above world map immediately catch one’s attention – not all countries have joined the information race, and it is difficult to pinpoint which ones are struggling the most. Secondly, some countries isolate themselves in the digital realm (e.g. North Korea, China), so part of the data is not accessible to us. Lastly, such a classification is simply a less prestigious list, rather devoid of purpose.

Let’s stick to the conclusion that although content marketing is gaining importance every year (the market is growing at around 14% annually), there is still a huge potential for development, especially in the African continent. However, judging by the exponential growth of digital content, these countries may rapidly expand their online presence, regardless of economic status – as was clearly seen in the case of the Indian subcontinent (i.e., Pakistan, India, Bangladesh) in recent years.

Summary

  • Activity in the field of content writing is extremely diverse on a global scale.
  • Among the 151 surveyed countries, the highest number of writers come from Pakistan. Content writing is also popular in Nigeria and India.
  • The main factors responsible for these results are demographics, increasing internet access, and proficiency in the English language.
